Exam information

What the examination looks like

In this short information video, Ha Thanh Špetlíková will introduce you to the form of the exam for permanent residence. She will tell you what parts the exam has and how many points you need to get. She will also give you information on where to find exam preparation materials. The video is subtitled.

How the examination transpires

  • Registration for the examination

    The exam can be taken only at selected schools. You can register via Online registration or personally at the school. To register, you must have a valid passport (travel document). 

  • What the examination looks like

    The exam consists of written and oral parts. The written part will test your skills in reading, writing and listening. The oral part will test your skills to answer questions and respond to situations.

  • What you do during the exam

    During the reading exam (40 minutes), you will receive a text with tasks. You write the answers on the answer sheet. During the writing test (25 minutes), you will receive assignments. You write your own text on the answer sheets. Then there is a pause.

    During the listening test (about 40 minutes) you will receive a text with tasks. You listen to the recording and write the answers on the answer sheets.

    During the oral exam (15 minutes), you answer questions and speak according to the pictures.

  • How the exam is assessed

    For the reading part, you get a maximum of 25 points, for the writing part a maximum of 20 points, for the listening part a maximum of 25 points and for the speaking part a maximum of 40 points. For the reading, writing and listening parts, you must get at least 42 points (that is 60% of all points). You must get at least 24 points for the speaking part (that is 60% of all points). If you do not get the minimum number of points in both the written and oral exam, you must repeat the whole exam.

    If you successfully pass the exam, you will receive a Certificate of Knowledge of the Czech Language at the school or the school will send it to you within 30 days after the exam date.

The Ten Rules of the Examination

  1. Please be punctual.
  2. In the examination room, please turn off your mobile phone.
  3. You have to put all of your things in the place designated.
  4. Place the card with the registration number and your travel document on the desk.
  5. During the written examination, if there is not a break, you may not leave the room, not even to use the toilet.
  6. You must work independently.
  7. Write the answers only on the answer sheet.
  8. Pay attention to what the examiner says and what you hear and see in the video.
  9. Please note that it is not possible to look at the tests in person after the tests.
  10. If you pass, you can pick up the certificate at the school or the school will send it to you within 30 days after the exam.

When the examination takes place

The examination takes place once a month:

  • either on Wednesday from 9:00,
  • or on Saturday from 9:00.

How much does the examination cost?

The cost of the examination is CZK 3,200. 

Who has to take the examination

Third-country nationals (outside the EU and EEA) who apply for a permanent residence permit must take the Examination in the Czech Language under the following conditions:

  • either they are applying for permanent residence after 5 years of residence in the CR,
  • or they have an EU Blue Card.

A document proving the required knowledge of the Czech language does not have to be submitted by someone who: 

  • has not reached the age of 15 or someone who is more than 60 years old,
  • proves that in the course of the 20 years preceding the application for a permanent residence permit he/she has been a pupil of:
    • a primary school (min. 1 school year),
    • or a secondary school (min. 1 school year),
    • or a student of a higher education institute with teaching in the Czech language or a study programme focused on the Czech language at a university (min. 1 academic year),
  • submits a confirmation that he/she has passed one of the examinations stipulated by Government Decree No. 31/2016 Coll., as amended by Government Decree No. 282/2023 Coll. (on proving knowledge of the Czech language for the purposes of obtaining a permanent residence permit):
    • a school-leaving examination in the Czech language
    • a certificate of the state language examination in the Czech language, which s/he passed at a language school with the right to a state language examination,
    • a state final examination, a state viva voce examination or a state doctoral examination taken at a university within a study program, which took place in the Czech language,
    • a Certified Examination in Czech for Foreigners (CCE) for level A2 or for a higher level,
    • a Czech language exam conducted for the purposes of granting citizenship of the Czech Republic,
    • a specialization examination carried out in accordance with the legal regulation governing the conditions for obtaining and recognizing professional competence and specialized competence to practice the medical profession of doctor, dentist, and pharmacist.

  • proves that he/she has a physical or mental handicap that would influence his/her ability to communicate.
